Jason Keidel, WFAN and CBS Sports columnist, joins the show to discuss the return of Mike Francesa to WFAN, getting to interview him before his “retirement” and major storylines in New York sports

A little more than four months ago, The Bridge produced an episode that garnered the most listens in show history. The subject? Mike Francesa, and a baker’s dozen worth of guests that worked with him and/or listened to him. Even Sour Shoes called in! Whelp, I guess our reminiscing was premature. The Sports Pope has returned to WFAN.

Before we get into Episode 109, as a reminder, The Bridge is broadcast as a one-hour radio show Monday through Friday on Sports Radio America  at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. A brand new show airs on Wednesdays, then is released as a podcast on iTunes and on this website immediately following the episode. You can listen to the show live on Wednesday night on Sports Radio America here or through the TuneIn app. Additional bonus content, including a weekly gambling segment, can be found exclusively on this podcast.

  • “Sports News Read Like Real News” throwback told the tale of the “Ode to Mike Francesa” monologue performed during the Zaun for Good contest, live at this year’s FrancesaCon 4. The segment includes audio from the contest itself, hosted by Chris “Mad Dog” Russo impressionist, Mike Benevento (2:14).
  • The Bridge Question of the Week is: Do you care that Mike Francesa is back on WFAN, and why? Leave a voicemail or text in your answer to 929-BRIDGE7, that’s 929-274-3437, and you’ll make it on the next show.
  • This week’s guest is Jason Keidel, he’s a spots columnist for WFAN and CBS Sports New York, and a longtime friend of the show. Jason was able to sit down for two hours with Mike Francesa leading up to his retirement last December to talk about Mike’s career in radio and what would come next with his career. Though Mike’s retirement from the ‘Fan ended up being a dress rehearsal, the twopart story made for a great read regardless, with Jason hitting on everything you’d want to know from Mike before his final show. We’ll chat about what went into putting that story together, what his conversation with Francesa was like and what his return means to the Fan and New York sports fans, before closing the show with his thoughts on some of the main storylines in New York sports, from the Jets taking Sam Darnold and the Giants taking Saquon Barkley, to the Mets and the Yankees and what team has the better chance of success come October.
  • Follow Jason on Twitter -> @JasonKeidel. The interview starts at the 12:09 mark.

– In the interview, we discuss:

His thoughts about Mike Francesa’s return to WFAN (12:30), his biggest takeaway from his interview with Mike Francesa just days before his retirement last December, including tales of Joe DiMaggio and Pat Riley (18:43), what the process was like to interview Francesa (23:44), if the Mike Francesa on the ‘Fan Part II will be a success (27:03), thoughts on the Jets taking Sam Darnold with their pick (33:10), thoughts on the Giants taking Saquon Barkley at No. 2 (37:03), who fares better – the Yankees or the Mets (43:49) and his latest piece dealing with the demise of Matt Harvey (50:06).

  • “Five Minutes in the Film Room” with Joe Baress, former star of the prestigious John and Joe Sports Show, breaks down “Avengers: Infinity War,” which Rotten Tomatoes describes as: An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe (53:10). You can follow Joe on Twitter @dukemich and read his movie reviews, previews and ratings at cupof-joe.com.
