Dan Orlovsky, former NFL quarterback, joins the show to discuss making history in college to becoming a backup in the NFL, tales from his career, what he’s up to in retirement and more [Ep. 107]

Dan Orlovsky

The NBA Playoffs are underway, hockey is happening, it’s COLD in baseball, and we’ll instead be talking about the National Football League. Chatter for the 2018 NFL Draft ran its course about two weeks ago, but we still have one more week ahead to hear it. Thankfully, Dan Orlovsky provided us some respite from it.

Before we get into Episode 107, as a reminder, The Bridge is broadcast as a one-hour radio show Monday through Friday on Sports Radio America  at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. A brand new show airs on Wednesdays, then is released as a podcast on iTunes and on this website immediately following the episode. You can listen to the show live on Wednesday night on Sports Radio America here or through the TuneIn app. Additional bonus content, including a weekly gambling segment, can be found exclusively on this podcast.

  • “Sports News Read Like Real News” flashed back to around this time last year to tell the tale of Carmelo Anthony’s “Shooters Shoot” mentality getting him into some trouble in the bedroom (2:13).
  • The Bridge Question of the Week is: Who is your favorite backup quarterback, and why? Leave a voicemail or text in your answer to 929-BRIDGE7, that’s 929-274-3437, and you’ll make it on the next show.
  • This week’s guest is Dan Orlovsky, a quarterback in the National Football League for 12 years who retired before last season and can now be heard as a QB analyst or seen writing for The Athletic. Dan is unfortunately known for some negative things from his career instead of positives, like being on the first team in NFL history to finish winless, or running out of his own end zone for a safety. We’ll hit on both of those things, both there’s so much more to his career than that and this was definitely one of my most favorite interviews. We’ll chat about when he knew he wanted to pursue football and his successful college career, the process of his NFL Draft and transitioning into a backup quarterback, the importance of that position, deciding to retire, what he does now and his favorite quarterback in this year’s draft.
  • Follow Dan on Twitter -> @danorlovsky7. The interview starts at the 7:57 mark.

– In the interview, we discuss:

When he knew he wanted to pursue football in college and beyond (8:26), why he decided to play at UCONN (9:45), the biggest takeaway from his historic career at Connecticut (12:17), what his NFL Draft process was like (14:34), how his mind set changed from being a starter to being a backup (18:48), how important the role of the backup quarterback is and what his role was at that position (21:22), The permanent pain that comes with going 0-16 and what he learned from that season (26:41), that time Peyton Manning kicked him out of the film room (30:09), drinking in Indy for free the rest of his life (33:42), the safety play and redemption the following game (34:28), how terrifying it would be to have Jared Allen running after you (37:20), how he wants to be remembered as an NFL player (38:11), what he’s missed the most since retiring (40:30), transitioning into broadcasting and how that process has been (41:47), if he’d suit up in the XFL (44:20) and his favorite quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft class.

  • “Five Minutes in the Film Room” with Joe Baress, former star of the prestigious John and Joe Sports Show, breaks down “A Quiet Place,” which Rotten Tomatoes describes as: In the modern horror thriller, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you (48:43). You can follow Joe on Twitter @dukemich and read his movie reviews, previews and ratings at cupof-joe.com.
