Yogi Roth, college football analyst for the Pac-12 Network, joins the show to discuss his path of player, coach, broadcaster, storyteller, traveller and more

Yogi Roth

Children have dreams of what they’ll become when they grow up, but most unfortunately are unable to reach those dreams for one reason or another. For Yogi Roth, no dream has been big enough to not pursue it, and he’s ended up with a pretty decent track record of making them happen.

Before we get into Episode 114, as a reminder, The Bridge is broadcast as a one-hour radio show Monday through Friday on Sports Radio America  at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. A brand new show airs on Wednesdays, then is released as a podcast on iTunes and on this website immediately following the episode. You can listen to the show live on Wednesday night on Sports Radio America here or through the TuneIn app. Additional bonus content can be found exclusively on this podcast.

  • This week’s guest is Yogi Roth, he’s a college football analyst for the Pac-12 Network, a filmmaker, author, traveller and storyteller just to name a few. He’s also someone I covered years ago as the sports editor for the prestigious Wyoming County Press Examiner in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Yogi has Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) roots, specifically where his story got started around Dalton and Factoryville and Lackawanna Trail High School. He went from dreaming to playing in the NBA, to winning a district championship and getting named all-state in high school before walking on as a receiver at the University of Pittsburgh and rooming with Larry Fitzgerald. We’ll talk about that path, the huge transition from a player to a coach, leaving his whistle behind for a career in sports media, the importance of family, traveling the world and some life lessons along the way. The adjective ‘storyteller’ definitely fits Yogi Roth, and we’ll have to have a Part 2 down the road to further dive into his podcast Life Without Limits, his documentary, “Life in a Walk,” and several other projects and passions aside from football.
  • Follow Yogi on Twitter -> @YogiRoth. The interview starts at the 3:33 mark.

– In the interview, we discuss:

Where he thought he would be now while growing up (4:25), using the doubters as motivation and learning from that (6:39), his biggest regret as a WR at Pitt coming at the hands of Notre Dame (10:56), some tales of his former roommate in college, Larry Fitzgerald (12:52), transitioning from player to coach and landing with USC during the heyday of Pete Carroll (16:24), if coaching came easy, even at a young age (19:49), experiencing the Rose Bowl for the first time (22:01), his childhood friend and friend of the show, John Glenn, winning a ring with Pete and the Seahawks years later (24:37), leaving coaching for sports media (27:03), getting his start in sports broadcasting (32:05), what the lowest point or hardest part of his journey has been (35:14), his relationship with his parents (39:20) and if he’s already planning where he’ll travel next (44:24).

  • “Five Minutes in the Film Room” with Joe Baress, former star of the prestigious John and Joe Sports Show, breaks down “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which Rotten Tomatoes describes as: Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes (47:43). You can follow Joe on Twitter @dukemich and read his movie reviews, previews and ratings at cupof-joe.com.
