The Stanley Cup Playoffs are here, which means it’s that time of year for many sports media outlets to pretend they care about the NHL, this one included! At least we talked to someone who knows a thing or two about hockey, and had some interesting stories to share about how he got to that point.
Before we get into Episode 106, as a reminder, The Bridge is broadcast as a one-hour radio show Monday through Friday on Sports Radio America at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. A brand new show airs on Wednesdays, then is released as a podcast on iTunes and on this website immediately following the episode. You can listen to the show live on Wednesday night on Sports Radio America here or through the TuneIn app. Additional bonus content, including a weekly gambling segment, can be found exclusively on this podcast.
- “Sports News Read Like Real News” told the tale of Patrick Reed’s favorite song to listen to while getting pumped up for The Masters and making Imagine Dragons the new voice of golf (2:14).

- This week’s guest is Zig Fracassi, a host and anchor for SiriusXM NFL Radio and SiriusXM Sports, as well as the host of This Week In College Hockey. Zig has been in sports talk radio for three decades and cut his teeth working through the local and national scene to get to the satellite level of today, continuing to get better at each step along the way. We’ll chat about how he got into sports broadcasting and working his way to SiriusXM before hitting one of his specialties, the national hockey league. We’ll touch on the major storylines from this season, some things to keep an eye on during the opening round of the NHL playoffs that kick off this week and what team has a shot to hoist the Stanley Cup.

– In the interview, we discuss:
When he knew he wanted to pursue sports broadcasting (9:41), some of the things he learned in the early part of his career (13:20), if anything has changed since he first started in sports media (18:41), why he’s the “Bobby Orr of sports updates” (21:23), the meaning behind being UB (24:55), covering the Frozen Four (27:14), why the Las Vegas Knights were the biggest storyline in the National Hockey League this year (28:27), the next city to get an expansion team (33:17), what makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs so special (34:56), some upsets we might see in the opening round of the NHL playoffs (38:21) and who wins the Stanley Cup (41:12).
- “Five Minutes in the Film Room” with Joe Baress, former star of the prestigious John and Joe Sports Show, breaks down the HBO film “Paterno,” which Rotten Tomatoes describes as: Starring Al Pacino in the title role, the drama centers on Penn State’s Joe Paterno in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, Paterno’s legacy is challenged and he is forced to face questions of institutional failure in regard to the victims (43:26).
