Super Bowl 52 is set in a rematch of Super Bowl 39, with the New England Patriots taking on the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ve got the old guard in quarterback Tom Brady, head coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft, the only three major players still around from the first time these teams played for the Lombardi trophy. Then there’s the new-age Philadelphia Eagles, trying to prove the world wrong for thinking they couldn’t get there. Whelp.

Before we get into Episode 98, as a reminder, The Bridge is broadcast as a one-hour radio show Monday through Friday on Sports Radio America  at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. A brand new show airs on Wednesdays, then is released as a podcast on iTunes and on this website immediately following the episode. You can listen to the show live on Wednesday night on Sports Radio America here or through the TuneIn app. Additional bonus content, including a weekly gambling segment, can be found exclusively on this podcast.

  • “Sports News Read Like Real News” told the tale of the LeBron James congratulating his past self on Instagram before scoring 30,000 points, and what other athletes or historical figures would congratulate their future selves (3:01).
  • The Bridge Question of the Week is: What would you congratulate your past self for, and why? Leave a voicemail or text in your answer to 929-BRIDGE7, that’s 929-274-3437, and you’ll make it on the next show.
  •  “The What??” a segment that highlights some soundbites or quotes from the latest week in sports. We’ve got Gregg Popovich talking NBA fights, Bill Belichick talking open heart surgery and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ biggest fan (10:11).
  • This week’s guest is Sigmund Bloom, the co-owner of Footballguys.com and someone you can find writing/producing audio, video and print content about the NFL basically year-round. We’ll chat about how he got into covering football and some of what you’ll find at Football Guys, then recap Championship Sunday, preview the Super Bowl, and end with a short discussion on some of the quarterbacks we’ll see taken in this year’s NFL Draft.
  • Follow Sigmund on Twitter -> @SigmundBloom. The interview starts at the 15:03 mark.

– In the interview, we discuss:

How he started covering football (16:03), watching Donovan McNabb at Syracuse (18:17), if there was any medium he initially struggled with when growing their brand (19:19), if he’s going to the Phish concert when they come to Austin (21:52), if he believed the Jaguars would beat the Patriots (22:50), the biggest turning point in the Patriots game (25:44), if Blake Bortles will be back at quarterback (30:00), if the Eagles dominance in Minnesota was surprising (32:23), the biggest themes for Super Bowl 52 (35:19), what the Eagles need to do to beat the Patriots (41:49), the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers (44:09) and quarterbacks to look out for in the 2018 Draft Class (46:38).

  • “Five Minutes in the Film Room” with Joe Baress, former star of the prestigious John and Joe Sports Show, breaks down “I, Tonya,” which Rotten Tomatoes describes as: Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked–and checkered–glory (51:28). You can follow Joe on Twitter @dukemich and read his movie reviews, previews and ratings at cupof-joe.com.
